How to choose a logistics school
Some schools have created programs for warehouse workers in response to the high demand for education that focuses specifically on logistics. Kathleen Hedland is the director of research and education for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. She says that companies want their employees to understand how they can impact customers, and how their actions in one department can impact other activities.
The degrees available vary but they all include fundamental courses that teach basic concepts, such as operations and supply chain management procurement, transportation and distribution networks storage and inventory management, as well as business fundamentals. Some universities also offer specializations including e-commerce and retail logistics, transportation and logistical analysis and global logistics management and more.
Graduates are able to assume roles such as supply chain managers and logisticians. They could also work in roles like purchasing agents as well as industrial production managers and distribution managers. They can also seek certifications such as the Certified Supply Chain Manager or the Certified Public Contract Manager to boost their career prospects.
In addition, to the variety of courses offered, consider whether a university is accredited by a body like the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation which recognizes 8,200 universities and 44,000 programs. Additionally, look for a college that has an adequate student-to-teacher ratio, as it will help ensure you receive the best instruction.
Some colleges offer hybrid or online programs that combine classroom instruction with online learning opportunities. This kind of format could appeal to those who have a flexible schedule or are unable to attend traditional classes. Some online-only courses provide associate degrees or certificates, while others provide master’s or bachelor’s degrees.
